The coach of the Marlette High School basketball team of 1957 [was] Rod Place who did replace Tommy Thompson as Sam Patrick indicated. Also, I talked to "Chub" Brenner recently, principle at Marlette at the time, thanks to his daughter Wende.
Chub got me straightened out who Lou Moon was-----Lou was the basketball coach at Sandusky. Therefore it was Tommy Thompson who was the tough, salty type coach of that same group in the year before ('55-'56).
I recall us beating that Marlette bunch as JV's during the '54-'55 season, and I believe the score was 58-52.
My junior year('55-'56) Vassar made it to the Regional finals at Flint's IMA as somewhat a Cinderella team going into the Districts with a 7-9 record.
We beat both Caro and Cass City who beat us handily in the regular season inthose districts, and then in the Regional opener whipped a 17-3 Ionia team 72-49. Flint Tech (no longer a school) then beat us 54-47 (sumpin' like that) in the Regional finals---end of Cinderella.
Marlette/Mayville/Fostoria had Danny Schell who played for the Philadelphia Phillies in the early '50s, and senior golf tour professional Tom Wargo who made the respective big shows. Strange, with many pretty good athletes in the Thumb, other than those two---none else to my knowledge made it to any major league level in any sport.

Sam Patrick: Now those names from the 1956-57 Marlette High School basketball team come back to me, and I thank you. It will be 50 years ago that this team came close to winning the Class C state title. I am a bit confused on who the coach was though, as my recollection it was Lou Moon. I recall that he was a large man who had somewhat of a Bobby Knight demeanor. Tommy Thompson doesn't ring a bell, but you may/or are likely right. Does anyone recall Lou Moon? Maybe another town or school?

In anser to you question: Yes I attended Parker school and so did my two older children. This may give my age away... but I went to parker school in 1946-47, and my children went about the year of 1961-62, still teaching was Mrs. prentiss. We then moved to Marlette and our children graduated from marlette high. I believe the school closed sometime after "64-"65, not real sure.. We had a school reunion for Parker.. the summer of 2005, turned out to be a very large crowd. Those were the fun filled days of the old country schools.. Your name sounds familar, where did you live at that time?

The 1957 Marlette basketball team was coached by 1st year coach Rod Place. He replaced legendary coach Tommy Thompson who retired and went into private business. The starters were Dick and Bob Caister, Ron Willis, Bill Beltz, and Dan Reidel. They lost in the semi finals to Kalamazoo Christian in the Lansing Civic Center. I was 10 and I was at the game. What a year for Marlette Basketball.

Hi all! Christmas Day falls on December 25. It is preceded by Christmas Eve on December 24, and in some countries is followed by boxing Day on December 26. Some Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas on January 7, which corresponds to December 25 on the Julian calendar. December 25 as a birthdate for Jesus is merely traditional, and is not thought to be his actual date of birth. Good luck!

After reading all of the postings here, I wanted to say hello to all in Marlette. I was born in Marlette; my family moved away when I was 2 but came back when I was in 6th grade. I moved away again after 9th grade - yes, I thought I would die! I would have graduated with the class of 75. Even after the short time I spent there, I have many great memories. Hello to the Ruchgys, Marylou Custer, the Burtons! Dave Glady - if you're out there send me an E-mail! Happy Holidays!

Well its that time of year again. With Christmas just a few weeks away. I am always taken back to when I was a child ... a baby really but i remember Marlette well. There was snow back in the early sixties. And thats what i dream about the most. Those Big colored lights hanging on the houses and lighting up the snow. With the beautiful pine trees and those rolling hills. I visited the folks who lived across the way from the farm. They are unbelievably still there. I guess some Christmas card guests never leave thus keeping the flavor and meaning alive. God bless all of you in Marlette this Christmas. My picture of one heck of a home town. Steven Doherty

My sons and I use to live in Marlette, 1985 to 1989. We lived first in the apartments behind the 76 station and then on Doyle street. Gail Northrup was my babysitter. I remember going to Huffmans, the bar at the Hotel (many Friday nights dancing), Beagio's to eat and Moores Ice Cream. Reading some of the Guest book brings back old memories. I live not to very far away but just seem to have time to pass on through on my way to the Thumb area, where I grew up. I'll keep checking back to see if I remember long lost friends.

I just returned from Michigan from my wife's family reunion this past weekend in Cheboygan. We decided to visit my home town of Clifford (49-57 grade school) & Marlette (58-61) as part of our trip. Have not been in the area since 1971. Unfortunately, I do not have anything to remind me of that time period except memories. I was greatly surprised & pleased to see the old Clifford grade school still standing & being used for a library. I also had to have some ice cream (where else, Moore's Dairy Bar)
I was glad to discover this Marlette web site after returning home. I did recognize a couple names while previewing the guest book postings. In fact, I see where Elane Ellis Watson is living in Forth Smith. What a small world. I have a daughter, four grand children & one great grand child living in the Fort Smith area. I wish the best for my home towns & will never forget where I came from. Cheers, good health & God bless, Lloyd

I would be interested in a potluck picnic somewhere if anyone else is interested. I don't know how we can get a message to any other classmates should we decide to set something up though. Maybe our class officers have something in the works that we aren't aware of. Anyone from the class of '86 can e-mail me if they want, and maybe we can set something up for the end of August.

We moved after I completed the 9th grade. We only lived there 4 years, but I consider Marlette my Home Town. Spending all summer at the pool, hanging at the stockyard during the sale, I helped mike Walker and his Dad, birth a breech calf on their farm!! You just can't get that "stuff" here in the city. We spent endless hours in "Moores Woods". We didn't need to be entertained, we went OUTSIDE and had a blast! Hello to all in Marlette, I will see it again someday. Be Blessed, Mickey

Just wanted to give everyone a update on Cordarro Willis, known as "Moakie". We moved from Marlette, Mi in July 2000 when my husband retired from the Oakland County Sheriff Dept. Moakie did not start running track til his 8th grade. Moakie discovered the hurdlers, just like his brother Donnie who ran track at Marlette Middle School, Moakie went undefeated his first year. High School was a little different with the hurdles being much higher. Moakie attends William Blount High School with a student body of over 1700 students. Moakie did well his freshman year, but thenext 3 years was a different story, Moak went to state in the 5-A division his 10th and 11th year placing 7th both years, his junior year he broke his high school record in the 300 hurdles which was over 18 yrs old with a 39.93. On May 3, 2006 Moakie broke his high school 110 high hurdles with a 14.6. Next week in Kingsport, Tn will attend the Regional to see if he goes to state. Moakie is rank as one of the best know hurdlers in Tenn. I just wanted to let our friends and family in Michigan know how well Moakie is doing in track and field.

My husband Donald graduated in 1987 from Marlette. Just wondering if there are any reunion planned for next year. He did not get to attend the last one but would love to hear from classmates. Although we live in Arkansas we do visit Michigan about once a year.

We've been away from Marlette for 15 yrs. But I dream of it every week. We were neighbors to the Geisters on Rogers Street (best neighbors ever). It was a vry nice town then because there were a lot of different shops of clothes and Mis. was a nice place to raise a family. Had a great time but like everything in life, nothing stays the same!

Just seeing if I recognized anyone. My family lived in Marlette from 1978 - 1993. I would have graduated in 1997 but moved after 8th grade. I have older siblings who graduated from Marlette - Becky 1986, Todd 1987, and Ryan 1990. Please contact me if anyone remembers me or would like to get in touch with anyone else in my family. Thanks!

Bob and Mary B of Marlette. I received your e-mail Mary regarding the '57 Marlette basketball team, but was unable to reply. I tried twice, but "Mail Delivery Subsystem" kept returning it. Anyway, this is a thanks. But I'm sure Lou Moon was the coach at the time, unless he left Marlette the year before that season? Sincerely, Tom
