The Marlette girls softball team began league play with a twinbill sweep over visiting Ubly on April 24.
In the opener, Kayla Brown had two sacrifice flys for RBI’s as Marlette claimed a 5-3 decision.
Marlette scored single runs in the first, second and fourth innings and added a two-run fifth.
Jenna Lange also had an RBI with a sacrifice fly, Jenna Thompson drove in a run on a two-out single and Kryssy Skakle and Caitlin King both doubled for Marlette.
King, who also singled for Marlette, started the game on the mound and went the complete seven innings fanning nine, not issuing any walks and scattering four hits.
Marlette grabbed a first inning lead and never looked back in the nightcap as the Raiders prevailed 9-1.
King went the distance for Marlette fanning seven, issuing one free pass and scattering just three hits. The Bearcats lone run was unearned as Marlette committed three errors.
Kelsey Ramsey’s single drove in Jenna Thompson in the first inning for the lead. Kryssy Skakle tripled home Allison Maynard who was running for King following her single in the second and Kayla Brown doubled home both Skakle and Kayla Roberts in the fourth. Brown added an RBI single in the sixth plating Lisa Gerstenberger.
Skakle, Brown, Thompson and Roberts all had a pair of hits for Marlette which improved to 8-4 overall.
The Marlette baseball team split a non-league twinbill with visiting North Branch on April 25.
In the opener, the Broncos rallied for one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but still fell 11-8 to Marlette.
Shawn Monroe went the distance for Marlette allowing eight runs on eight hits while walking seven and fanning eight.
Marlette scored single runs in both the second and third, added four in the fourth and posted five in the fifth.
Marlette outhit the visitors 14-8. Shane Mitrovich hit Marlette’s first homer of the campaign, scored twice and drove home a pair of runs for Marlette.
Also hitting were Matt Cook with a single and a pair of doubles, Peter Howard with a single and double, and Ryan Leveille and Shane Mitrovich with a double. David Bliss and Tony Clark swatted a pair of singles for Marlette while Jason Shaw and Grant Fiedler also singled.
In the nightcap, North Branch rallied for two runs in the sixth inning to record a 6-5 come-from-behind win.
Jon Hayward went the distance for Marlette allowing three hits, three earned runs, six walks and fanning one.
Marlette scored three times in the second and two more in the fourth.
Matt Cook and Jason Shaw both hit a single and double for Marlette while Derek Hoig and Grant Fiedler also singled.
McEwen, Devor pace
Marlette soccer team to
3-1 decision over Red Hawks
Averi McEwen booted two goals and netminder Joyce Devor made seven saves as the Marlette varsity soccer team defeated visiting Cass City 3-1 on April 21.
Harmony Costanza also scored for Marlette as the Raiders got all of their goals in the second half.
Shannon McEwen had a pair of assists while Stephanie Smith was also credited with an assist.
“We started out a bit slow, but in the second half we really picked it up and put the pressure on them. The girls did a nice job getting pressure up front and finding the net.
“I was really impressed with how the defense handled the game and kept them from getting any really quality shots on goal. Their goal came off a penalty kick.
The defense is made up of Stephanie Smith, Taylor Mock, Jordan Hollenbeck, Ashley Heussner and Rachel Hart,” Marlette coach Dave Hayden said.
On April 17, Marlette traveled to Dryden and dropped a 4-0 decision.
Wendy Devor made seven saves in goal while Joyce Devor added five saves Marlette was limited to just 10 shots on goal.
“We did not have enough quality opportunities on the goal and it cost us in the end. I felt the girls lacked aggressiveness from the beginning and when they picked it up Dryden had a hard time slowing us down. Our girls have got to get to the net and put pressure on. I feel that our defense is really starting to gel and come together as a unit,” Hayden offered.
On April 14, Marlette traveled to Harbor Beach and dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime.
Joyce Devor stopped 11 shots on goal while Marlette fired 17 shots on goal.
“We had plenty of shots on goal, but just could not put one in the net. In the overtime, their keeper came up with a very nice save and gave her team the chance to win the game,” Hayden said.
Raiders go 2-1 on day to place
runner-up at Marlette Invitational
The Marlette girls softball team took second place at the April 19 Marlette Invitational with a 2-1 record. Frankenmuth captured the event going 3-0. Bishop Foley finished 1-2 while Capac went 0-3.
In the opener, Marlette exploded with eight runs in the fourth inning in route to a 12-4 win over Capac.
The Raiders added three runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth. Capac scored all it runs in the fourth.
Jenna Lange, Lindsay Maynard and Kelsey Ramsey all drove in two runs each while Jenna Thompson and Kayla Roberts each added RBI singles in the fourth. Kryssy Skakle paced the attack with a double and a pair of singles.
Caitlin King went the first five innings for Marlette picking up the win as she scattered five hits and a walk while fanning nine. Katie Clark pitched the final two innings allowing one hit and collecting a strike out.
Marlette pounded out 15 hits in the opener.
In contrast, the Raiders were held to just one hit in their second game as they went down at the hands of the Frankenmuth Eagles by a 3-1 score.
Frankenmuth scored once in the first off loser Caitlin King and added two more in the third. Marlette scored its lone run in the fifth.
Lindsay Maynard singled for Marlette’s only hit while Eagle hurler Heather Schultz fanned 15 Raiders.
King allowed six hits and two earned runs.
Marlette rebounded to claim second place with a 9-5 win over Bishop Foley. Marlette scored four runs in both the first and second innings and added a single run in the fourth.
Marlette scored four in the first on three walks, an error and an RBI single off the bat of Kryssy Skakle.
The Raiders pushed across four runners in the second on five hits with two each RBI’s from Kelsey Ramsey and Kayla Brown.
Katie Clark pitched her first game of the season going 5 2/3rd’s innings for the win. Clark walked eight and was knicked for six hits and five earned runs. King finished in relief walking one and not allowing a hit.

Raider girls win
triangular meet
Team depth played a vital role as the Marlette girls track team hosted and won a triangular meet on April 8.
Marlette claimed first with 89.5 points followed by Deckerville with 57.5 and Sandusky with 21.
The Marlette ‘A’ team placed second in the 3200 meter relay at 11:46.01 and included Kasey Sauder, Sarah Smith, Kristen Hirsch and Chelsea Mata.
Amber Wood claimed the 100m hurdles for Marlette with a time of 18.01. Placing third overall was Angela Odoerfer at 18.29 while Jena Huffman was fourth at 19.35.
Marlette took fifth and sixth in the 100 meter run. Keagan Wilson captured fifth at 14.54 and Victoria Chappel was sixth at 14.84.
Marlette ‘A’’ claimed first in the 800 meter relay at 2:00.26. That squad featured Kristina Fingerle, Alex Willis, Keagan Wilson and Angela Odoerfer.
Mata placed first in the 1600 meter run at 6:15.25 while Kayla Romosier was second at 6:18.64, Sarah Smith was third at 6:28.19, Kasey Sauder was fourth at 6:40.17 and Kristen Hirsch was fifth at 6:49.15.
Marlette ‘A’ also took the 400 meter relay at 56.92. Team members were Kristina Fingerle, Amara Wilson, Keagan Wilson and Angela Odoerfer.
Alex Willis paced Marlette in the 400 meter dash at 68.81.
Amber Wood took a second in the 300m low hurdles at 59.65 and Jena Huffman was third at 60.38.
Mata also took second in the 400 meter run at 2:46.64 and Hirsch was fifth at 3:07.55.
Alex Willis tied for first in the 200 meter dash with a 00.30 while Keagan Wilson tied for third at 00.31.
Marlette took the top three finishes in the 3200 meter run. Smith topped the field at 13:25.56, Romosier was second at 13:45.02 and Sauder was third at 14:38.58.
Fingerle, Willis, Northrop and Mata combined to claim the 1600 meter relay at 4:55.72.
Odoerfer claimed the long jump for the Raiders at 14’ 08” while Wood was third with a mark of 14’.
Marlette also won the high jump when Victoria Chappel claimed that event at 4’ 10”.
Marlette took four of the top six spots in the shot put. Amara Wilson was second at 29’ 11.50”, Kendra Smith was fourth at 29; 02.25”, Catherine Distelrath was fifth at 28’ 10” and Tiffany Gomes was sixth at 27’ 04”.
Marlette took the top four spots in the discus. Wood won with a toss of 91’ 01” while Distelrath was second at 85’ 04”, Amara Wilson was third at 82’ 04” and Kendra Smith was fourth at 75’ 09”.
